What database should a new developer build?

I've been presenting a lot about training junior developers and just wanted to throw out some specific examples of training exercise that I think are valuable. Of course you'll want to use existing resources like the FileMaker Training Series (FTS), Cris Ippolite's videos on Lynda.com, and get your hands on a few FileMaker 12 books. In my class we put together a portfolio of resources from TechNet to Blogs, to user guides. But the following list is just a quick dump of systems and skills I think every developer should know how to do. Repetition is a huge part of learning ...

Should I hire an intern?

Lately business is looking up and companies are talking about hiring interns versus a full time or junior developer. I love interns but I think it is a completely different hire than hiring a full-time, junior developer. Interns are typically college students who are eager to add qualifications to their resume. My experience is interns can be extremely useful but rarely turn in to full time employees. I suggest people develop intern programs if they have low level tasks that need to be managed in order to free up other employees. Throw the intern a FileMaker Training Series book, ask ...

How to hire and train a Junior Developer

Since I'm typically talking about business topics at Devcon--as opposed to technical issues--I usually have a small crowd. This year for my session on "How to hire and train a junior developer" I was surprised to have a packed room. I've known that hiring and recruiting is a huge issue in the FileMaker community and has been for years, but I was surprised at how many people (consultants, business owners, in-house developers) were interested in the topic. It's obviously a top concern at FileMaker as well. This is the first year I looked out into the audience to see top FileMaker ...

Think big, start small and the success of Baconfest

Occasionally, I'll get together with a group of friends to share ideas and opportunities. After our meetings I would often call up fellow collaborator Seth Zurer and say, "Big things Seth! It's going to happen! The BIG idea is on its way!" and I remember him saying, "How's about we start small?" During one of our meetings, Seth mentioned he and a few friends had an idea of hosting an event centered around indulgence in eating bacon. We all thought that was a great idea and laughed at how fun it would be to have an "all bacon all the time" ...

Apprentice Series: Bullet Proofing by Dave Knight

Today we had the pleasure of having Dave Knight, President of Angel City Data talk to our group about how to bullet-proof your systems by using great testing and development procedures. As Dave says, "If your boat springs a leak, you don't want it to sink." Given the you can never anticipate all the variables that could affect your system, Dave's suggestions really give everyone a great starting point for making sure they've identified and ferreted out any key problems, before a solution is released. General tips that are great both for the novice and as reminders for the experienced user include: 1. ...

Apprentice Series: Certification Prep Cris Ippolite

In today's seminar, Cris Ippolite, owner of i-Solutions generously gave us a sneak peek of his Devcon presentation on preparing for FileMaker Certification. Not only was this a great overview of how to prepare for the test, but he provided valuable insights into how the required material can help improve our day to day development skills. Ippolite is a certified FileMaker Trainer and in addition to teaching directly from the FileMaker Training Series materials, he has produce a series of videos on Lynda.com that we are using in our training. The examples on lynda.com are less complex than the FTS materials which ...

Apprentice Series: Needs Analysis with Jason Mundok

In our series today, we had the pleasure of hosting Jason Mundok. Jason is a FileMaker developer, consultant and coach. Jason is also a talented artist and musician and runs a creative company called The WoodStove House. Today Jason helped talk our team through a series of exercises necessary to understand client needs and managing customer expectations. One of the things Jason and I did was run through a sample initial interview. A few nice things our apprentices were able to pick up are some elements that we may not even think to point out in career because the questions are ...

Apprentice Series: Developer Tools with Matt Navarre

One of the things new developers often miss out on is the opportunity to use existing dev tools or 3rd party tools to enhance your work habits. In today's session, we were fortunate to have Matt Navarre, President of MSN Media join us to give an overview of developer tools. For new developers, and seasoned developers as well it's a treat to see how someone else uses the tools. I always pick something up whenever I watch someone else work and this session was no different. Matt started out by outlining the features of Script Debugger and Data Viewer. I appreciated how ...

I'd love to hear from you if you have ideas about training junior developers or if you are interested in the program.

When to Hire, Who to Hire

One of the biggest challenges in a sole proprietor or small business owner's business growth is determining when to hire a new employee. And once you've decided you need to hire, how do you decide WHO to hire? Here are a few quick thoughts from recent discussions. Most people who come to me looking to hire are in triage mode. They are overwhelmed with work that may or may not be profitable work. They are concerned about their ability to deliver high quality work to their clients when they are so overloaded. At the same time, they are worried about bringing ...
